Rheem Thermostat Installation: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

Rheem thermostat installation in Chicago typically runs $180-$380 for a standard wired model, or $280-$520 for a Wi-Fi-enabled smart stat, including removal, wiring verification, and programming. We stock Rheem-compatible thermostats on every truck and can usually swap one same-day, even in January when a failed stat leaves you guessing whether the furnace is coming on at all. Most homeowners figure out something’s wrong when the house won’t hold temperature, the display goes blank, or the system starts short-cycling at 3 a.m. during a lake-effect cold snap.

Which Rheem Models This Applies To

Rheem has used three main control platforms across its residential lines, and the thermostat you need depends on which one is talking to your system. The Classic Series (RGPE, RGPQ furnaces and 13AJM, 14AJM AC units) uses conventional 24-volt wiring, typically with a 5-wire low-voltage bundle. The Classic Plus and Prestige lines (R96V, R802V furnaces, RA20, RA18 heat pumps) often ship with Rheem’s proprietary EcoNet communicating thermostat, which uses a 3-wire ABCD bus rather than standard R/W/Y/G terminals. The gotcha: an EcoNet board won’t recognize a generic stat, and a conventional stat wired to an EcoNet system will either not power up or will default to limited functionality.

To identify yours, pop the faceplate and read the terminal labels. If you see R, W, Y, G, and possibly C or O/B, you’ve got conventional wiring. If you see A, B, C, D or a Rheem part number starting with 42-24196 or 42-24197, you’re in EcoNet territory. We carry both the Rheem OEM EcoNet 3.0 (part 42-24196-08) and quality conventional aftermarket stats from Honeywell and Emerson that play nice with Rheem’s 24-volt boards. Fireside Heating & Air Co. of Chicago is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rheem, so we’ll tell you straight when an aftermarket stat saves you sixty dollars without giving up reliability.

Signs Your Rheem Thermostat Is Failing

  • Blank or flickering display. The 24-volt transformer sends power through the stat; if the backlight dies or digits fade, the stat’s internal power supply is usually failing. In Chicago’s older housing stock, voltage drops from aging doorbell transformers can mask as a bad stat, so we always verify source voltage before condemning it.
  • Temperature swings of 4+ degrees from the setpoint. The thermistor inside the stat drifts out of calibration after 8-12 years, especially in homes near the lake where humidity swings are brutal. Your furnace runs, but it overshoots and undershoots because the stat thinks the room is a different temperature than it actually is.
  • Short-cycling: system turns on and off every 5-10 minutes. This wears out the relay contacts inside the stat, or the anticipator setting is wrong for your Rheem furnace’s heat output. We’ve seen this kill a perfectly good inducer motor in Bridgeport bungalows because the homeowner waited too long.
  • “Heat on” or “cool on” flashing, but nothing starts. The stat is calling for conditioning, but the 24-volt signal isn’t making it to the board. Could be loose terminal screws, could be a cracked solder joint inside the stat from decades of thermal expansion.
  • Unresponsive buttons or phantom setting changes. The membrane switch degrades, or in smart stats, the firmware glitches after a power outage. We’ve replaced three Rheem EcoNet stats in Jefferson Park after ComEd surges corrupted the software beyond a hard reset.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Stat Type Installed Price What’s Included
Basic digital (non-programmable) $180-$280 Stat, removal, wiring check, install, test
Programmable / 7-day $220-$340 Above plus scheduling setup
Wi-Fi smart stat (Honeywell, Emerson Sensi) $280-$450 Above plus app pairing, homeowner walkthrough
Rheem EcoNet 3.0 (OEM communicating) $380-$520 Full system integration, register with EcoNet cloud

What drives the range: whether your existing wiring has a common (C) wire for power, whether we need to fish new low-voltage cable through plaster walls in a 1920s Chicago two-flat, and whether your Rheem system needs the communicating stat or can run on a conventional replacement. Every install includes verification that all stages of heating and cooling engage properly, and it’s all backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise - in writing, no paperwork, no arguing. The price quoted is the price paid.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: verify the stat has power at the breaker, pop the faceplate to see if wires are loose, and try a fresh set of batteries if it’s battery-backed. If you’ve got a multimeter and know how to read 24 volts AC without grounding yourself to the furnace chassis, you can confirm voltage at the R and C terminals.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong: Chicago code requires low-voltage wiring to be properly secured and protected from contact with line voltage, and if you miswire a heat pump stat, you can energize the reversing valve in heat mode and cook the compressor. More than that, Rheem’s EcoNet systems need to be configured at the board level after stat replacement; swap the hardware without the setup sequence and the system runs in default mode, which in a January cold spell means no second-stage heat when you need it. We’re not going to tell you a stat swap is brain surgery, but we will tell you that the forty bucks you save doing it yourself evaporates fast at 2 a.m. when the house is fifty-two degrees and the part store doesn’t open until Tuesday. Call (833) 983-1671 and we’ll quote it upfront, show up when we say, and put shoe covers on before we walk through your door.
