• EL296V and EL195E high-efficiency furnaces - pressure switch and induced draft motor failures. These units run hard through Chicago’s January cold snaps, and the pressure switch tubing can clog with condensation sludge or fine debris from decades of city air. • XC25 and XC20 variable-capacity air conditioners - communicating control board faults. The iComfort board talks to the thermostat over a two-wire bus, and voltage spikes from ComEd’s summer grid strain can corrupt the handshake. We’ve found boards that test fine on the bench but drop communication under load at 95 degrees. • ML195 and ML180 single-stage furnaces - cracked heat exchangers in older installs. These workhorses were put in thousands of Chicago bungalows and two-flats from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s. The heat exchanger warranty was 20 years on many units, but the part is often back-ordered now. • SLP98V modulating furnaces - flame sensor and gas valve sequencing errors. The modulating gas valve has more moving parts than a single-stage unit, and Chicago’s gas pressure fluctuations, especially in older neighborhoods with cast-iron mains, can cause the valve to hunt between firing rates.
