The DX13SA, DX16SA, and DX18TC condensers we see most often in Chicago bungalows and two-flats typically ship with a 35/5 µF or 45/5 µF dual-run, 370 or 440 VAC rating. Here’s the gotcha: Daikin labels their OEM capacitors with a part prefix that doesn’t cross-reference cleanly to generic specs. The board might call for “P/N 2017540” when what you actually need is a 35/5 µF, 440 VAC, with a 2.5-inch diameter to fit the mounting bracket. So does the voltage rating, and 440 VAC will always substitute for 370, but never the reverse.

Signs Your Daikin Capacitor Replacement Is Failing

  • Outdoor unit hums, compressor won’t start. The capacitor’s job is to deliver a surge of current to get the compressor moving. When the internal dielectric degrades, that surge weakens. You’ll hear the contactor click, then a low hum that fades after a few seconds. The compressor tries, can’t overcome initial torque, and the thermal overload eventually trips.
  • Intermittent cooling, especially on hot afternoons. A weakening capacitor may still start the compressor when ambient temperatures are moderate, then fail under the heavier load of a 92-degree Chicago August day.   • Condenser fan spins slowly or not at all. On dual-run capacitors, the same component feeds both compressor and fan circuits. When the fan side weakens first, the blade may turn at half speed or stall completely while the compressor still runs. That overheats the refrigerant and can trip high-pressure safeties.
  • Bulging or leaking capacitor case. The metal canister swells when internal pressure builds from electrolyte breakdown. If you see oily residue around the base or a domed top, the part has already failed or is about to. Don’t touch it. The stored charge can still deliver a serious shock even with power disconnected.
  • System draws higher amperage than rated. A weak capacitor forces the compressor to work harder through every start cycle. Your electric bill creeps up before you notice comfort problems. We’ve seen 20-amp circuits pulling 28 amps sustained, which risks breaker damage or wire overheating in older Chicago panel boxes.
