Which York Models This Applies To

York has used a fairly consistent capacitor spec across its residential lines, but the mount style and microfarad rating change enough that guessing costs you a second trip. The LX Series heat pumps and air conditioners from roughly 2008 forward typically take a 35/5 µF or 40/5 µF dual-run capacitor, round or oval depending on the cabinet size. The older Legacy line and some builder-grade TG8S furnaces with ECM blower motors use a separate single-run capacitor for the blower, usually 7.5 or 10 µF. Affinity units, York’s higher-tier line, sometimes spec a higher-voltage capacitor, 440 VAC rather than 370, and that’s a compatibility gotcha: a 370 will fit and test fine for a week, then fail early in Chicago’s heat-cold swing cycle.

We check the York nomenclature plate on the outdoor cabinet or blower compartment, match the µF rating exactly, and verify the physical size so the bracket doesn’t need bending. For OEM, York sources through Johnson Controls, but we’ve had excellent longevity with Genteq and Titan Pro aftermarket equivalents that meet the same EIA-456-A standard. We carry both. Signs Your York Capacitor Replacement Is Failing

  • Humming outdoor unit, no compressor start. The capacitor’s job is to give the compressor motor that initial torque boost. When the stored charge drops, the compressor can’t overcome head pressure. You hear the contactor click, then a dull hum, then nothing. In Chicago’s humidity, this is the call we get most.
  • Fan spins slow, backwards, or not at all. The dual-run capacitor serves both compressor and condenser fan. When the fan side weakens, the blade might turn the wrong direction or need a push-start with a stick. That stick trick works once. Then it doesn’t.
  • Intermittent cooling, especially on the hottest days. A failing capacitor can still store partial charge. Morning starts fine, afternoon fails. The capacitor’s tolerance tightens as ambient temperature rises, so a marginal part works in April and quits in July.
  • Hard starts that shake the unit. When the capacitor delivers a weak boost, the compressor draws excess amperage trying to start. You feel the cabinet shudder. Repeated hard starts overheat the compressor and can trip the internal overload or your breaker.
  • Bulging or leaking capacitor top. The metal dome on top should be flat. Heat and age cause electrolytic breakdown, pressure builds, and the top domes outward or leaks oily residue. If you see this, the capacitor is done. Don’t touch the terminals even after power-down; these hold a lethal charge.
