You’ll find these on GSX13, GSX14, GSX16 air conditioners; GMSS92, GMSS96, and GMEC96 furnaces with blower modules; and most Goodman heat pumps from the last fifteen years. The part number lives on a metal label - look for “MFD” and “VAC” ratings. Common Goodman specs are 35/5 MFD at 370 or 440 VAC, though older R22-era units often ran 45/5 or 50/5 MFD. Physical size matters too: some tight condenser cabinets need a round can, others fit the oval.

• Humming outdoor unit, no compressor start. The capacitor stores the electrical jolt that kicks the compressor over. When it weakens, the compressor draws locked-rotor amperage and trips on internal overload within seconds. You’ll hear the hum, then silence, then humming again five minutes later as the overload resets.
• Condenser fan spins slowly or backwards on startup. The fan motor gets its phase shift from the same dual-run capacitor. A weak capacitor can’t establish proper rotation, so the fan may twitch, reverse, or run at half speed until the motor overheats.
• Intermittent cooling that worsens on hot afternoons. Capacitor output drops as ambient temperature rises. A marginal capacitor that starts the compressor at 8 a.m. may fail at 3 p.m. when the Oak Park or Garfield Ridge backyard hits 95 degrees. That’s why we test under load, not just with a multimeter.
• Bulged or leaking capacitor can. The electrolyte inside generates hydrogen gas as it degrades. The can domes outward, or you may see oily residue at the terminals. We’ve found these cracked open after hard freezes in Portage Park - the thermal expansion finishes what summer started.
• System runs but draws excessive amperage. A weak capacitor forces the compressor to work harder for the same output. Your electric bill climbs before the unit fails completely. We see this most in May and June, before the capacitor gives out entirely in July.
