How Lennox Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

We’ve worked on Lennox furnaces in Chicago for over 42 years. These are the failures we see most, and what we do about them.

  • EL296V and EL195E: pressure switch faults from Chicago’s freeze-thaw cycles. The variable-speed EL296V and single-stage EL195E both use pressure switches that can stick after years of our brutal January cold snaps followed by rapid thaws. Moisture gets in, freezes, expands, and the switch reads false. We test with a manometer, clean the port, and replace with an OEM Lennox switch if the diaphragm’s cracked. Aftermarket switches save $30 but fail faster in this climate - we tell you which route makes sense for how long you’re keeping the house.
  • SLP98V inducer motor bearing wear. The modulating SLP98V runs its inducer at constantly varying speeds, which is efficient but hard on bearings after 10-12 years. You hear a low groan on startup that gets worse. We pull the assembly, check shaft play, and source either the OEM Lennox kit or a proven aftermarket equivalent with the same sealed-bearing spec. In Edison Park and Norwood Park, we’ve replaced more of these since 2018 than the prior decade - the variable-speed trend caught up.
  • ML193 cruciform heat exchanger stress cracks. The ML193’s aluminized steel heat exchanger develops hairline cracks where the four chambers meet, especially in homes that oversized the unit and short-cycle it through mild Chicago shoulder seasons. We scope it with a borescope, show you the image, and if it’s cracked, we red-tag it. No exceptions. This is where repair ends and replacement begins, and we’ll say so plainly.
  • Ignitor failure across the Merit series (ML180, ML193). The silicon nitride ignitors in these workhorse units last 4-7 years in Chicago’s dry winter air. When they go, you get nothing - no click, no flame, just the blower running on cold air. We stock the 41K56 and 768A-844 equivalents on every truck, so most Merit-series ignitor replacements are done in under an hour. We also check gas valve draw while we’re there; a weak valve strains the new ignitor.
  • SL280V blower motor module failures. The variable-speed ECM in the SL280V is efficient until the module fails, which it does when Chicago’s summer humidity creeps into the cabinet through fall and corrodes the board. We see this in lake-adjacent neighborhoods - Rogers Park, South Shore - more than inland. We can replace just the module with a Genteq equivalent if the motor windings test good, saving a full motor replacement. We test resistance phase-to-phase before recommending.

Our Lennox Heating & Furnace Process

  1. 1
You call, we answer. A live person picks up, 24 hours a day. You describe what the system’s doing - noises, smells, no heat, erratic cycling. Terry’s daughter schedules it, and we’ll be there when we say.
  2. 2
Diagnosis with Lennox-specific tools. We arrive with the Lennox service manual loaded on our tablets, plus the pressure gauges, manometers, and combustion analyzers these units need. No guessing.
  3. 3
Parts decision: OEM, quality aftermarket, or both. We show you what’s available, the price difference, and how long each lasts in Chicago conditions. The choice is yours. We don’t markup either path.
  4. 4
The repair, done right. Shoe covers on, work completed, combustion checked, gas pressure verified. We run the full heat cycle before we pack up.
  5. 5
Written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we make it right. No paperwork to file, no arguing. The guarantee is on your invoice.
  6. 6
Cleanup and straight talk. We leave the basement cleaner than we found it, and we tell you honestly if this repair buys you two years or ten. Tell me what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs.

Why Chicago Homeowners Call Fireside Heating & Air Co. of Chicago for Lennox Work

We’ve been in Chicago since 2018. Terry Kowalski learned this trade at Olive-Harvey College and has been fixing furnaces here for going on 41 years - he knows which Lennox parts fail in lake-effect humidity versus dry western-suburb winters. Our technicians are trained on nine major brands, not just Lennox, so if your system is mismatched with a Carrier coil or Trane condenser, we catch it. The 90-Day Done Right Promise is written, not spoken. Phones are answered by a live person every hour of every day. And we offer $50 off any repair over $250, free second opinions on any written estimate, $89 seasonal tune-ups, and a permanent 5% discount for seniors and veterans.
